Today was the first day of the pobr trip and to start off we was given a presentation about
climate change by Jonalee Squeochs at Heritage University. The one thing that really caught my attention in the presentation was how the waters in our valley are changing such as the temperature in rivers and it's causing salmon, steelheads, and lamprey to be vulnerable to diseases. Another thing that caught my attention was the weather changes in our valley during winter because we usually have snow but because of climate change we're gonna start having more rain or mixed snow and rain throughout the years and it affects the summer because in some areas they depend on the heavy snowfall from winter to melt and support those areas but with less snow it becomes hard for the areas and dries out making it easier for fires to spread.
Today may have been the first day of the two week trip but I learned a lot about climate change and it really impressed me about how they want to fix these problems, they're open to ideas on how you could fix them or they provide ways on how you could help to. After the presentation we went up towards Mount Adams and camped by potato hill when we got to the campsite it was infested with mosquito's so while we were setting up camp we had to keep spraying on bug spray to keep the mosquito's away, we have 3 groups of the heritage and high school student to either do dishes, cooking, or packing and group 1 was the first to cook and we had spaghetti it was hard to eat with all the mosquito's but it was still good and we tried to have an introduction night but we were chased away. I was in group 2 and we had to do dishes and we tried to warm the water up but it was cool but not warm water and the rest of the water for rinsing and bleaching tubs for dishes were cold Destiny, Omar, Junior, and I were rotating so we all could warm our hands, as soon as we were done there was a campfire and so we all kind of talked and just watched the fire and around ten is when me and Priscilla (my camping partner) we went to bed around 10:00 p.m. and that’s the end of day one.
